Why does my cat meow at night time and does it sound like she has a 'mental disorder'?
She is spoilt. We give her everything she needs, even wants, because when we adopted her, she was pregnant and had been abused by her previous owners and we wanted her to feel like she is allowed to be loved, we've had her since June '10 she never used to meow, at all. Once she had her kittens, we took care of them for her and gave them all away, to good homes. In that time we did have a kitten, that she used to chase around the house and hiss at. We thought about keeping the kitten but it soon became clear that our cat loved having all the attention, so we gave her away. She has been spayed since then but we don't let her out because we live in the UK and currently, the weather is terrible! It rains all day where I live and the temperature is so low. She didn't ever go out before so we don't think it's because she's inside all the time. She meows, more like howls at night and keeps us up. Could it be that she is lonely? She never used to play with the kitten at night, she'd always sleep by herself but she's become so restless. She meows at anything, she chases her own shadow, she has become so playful, which we love but she's also gone a bit loopy. She'll jump up on the window sill then smack off the window and fall on the floor, if the door is opened a little bit and she wants to get through, she'll smack her head off it, so we've had to leave all the doors in the house open, in case she hurts herself. When I'm in the kitchen cooking, she'll stare at me and meow, when I say something like 'what's wrong' she'll run out of the kitchen and hide under the dining table and won't move until I've left the room. She does the same with my partner. What could be wrong with her? Thanks!

It doesn't sound like there's anything mentally wrong with your cat, it could just be going through a phase. I don't think her behaviour is because she is missing the kitten; it seems to be that she just needs a bit more attention. The antsy and playful behaviour could be a resulting factor of her wanting to be more active/get more attention. A reason this may be happening could be due to changing weather. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, can affect cats as well as humans. The way she is acting may be a result of this. Here is a link with more information on it:

Ask a vet. It could be an illness that is causing this behavior. My first thought is that she's in heat and wants out to get pregnant again but you said she's been spayed. First ask a vet. If the behavior is so bizarre that she could hurt herself then there are products that will calm her down which you can ask the vet about. There's also something call Feliway (not sure if it's sold in UK) but through PetsMart or PetCo. A little spritz around or near cat or on cat bed can calm her down. I use it in the carrier to get my very nervous cat to the vet's office.
