Golden Retriever, Husky, and Border collie owners: please help me decide!?
I'm putting together a little presentation for my parents to help us all decide which dog is best for our family. Long story short, if you know the common things people claim to be "pros" or "cons" about the breed you own or have had experience with, please cover them in a sort of written "testimony"! I want to know every little good or bad habit/experience/quirky detail about your Golden retriever, Husky, and/or Border collie! (A husky is the breed I'm pushing for the most, so... try and, uh, embellish a little. Lol. I'm taking your actual quotes and placing them in a power point). Thank you!

Okay, I happen to be the owner of all three dog breeds. I probably have the best answer out of all of them because they cant seem to be straight. I love the way that you are going about this. Very smart.
Golden Retrievers: They make wonderful family dogs and are great for active families. PROS: They are very intellegent and get along with just about anyone. One of the most popular dogs in the world and also quite beautiful. You can train them to do anything and with a golden, they dont require as much work as the other two, but im not worried that you wont take care of it. After all, they need to give some credit, you have owned a dog before. CONS: I will agree that if you are not careful, you can end up with a golden retriever with a bad attitude. Yes they have risen but are not a concern, and they do take time to groom.
Border Collies: Considered to be the smartest dog, with poodles number 2 and GSD number 3, They are very loyal, very smart, you can train it to do about anything. They are very beautiful as well. However, they are probably the most high energy dog here. Mine cant seem to calm down, she barlely sleeps lol. And she is quite protective when it comes to strangers. They can be a little dog aggressive and dont expect to have any cats, cuz they will most likely chase them off.
And Huskies: They are very loving and great to exercise with. If you do live in a hott climate, get a little dog pool for it, you can play some really fun activites with him in there. They also tend to howl. They love to talk. And those eyes are to die for. However, they can be pushy and will make you put them in your place. Mine has been in training for 4 years and she stills tries to push me around. They do need alot of play time. And they will get destructive if you dont fullfill his needs and stimulate him. They can also escape really well, so make sure you have a fence or your dog is always around you when outside. They do runoff given their nature and what they were bred for. They need room to run. I really hope this helps. Wish you many years of love with your new companion.

I have always grew up with goldens. They are the best and the prettiest! I think they are at high risk for some types of cancer. As long as you follow good lines though they should be okay. my old dog lived till 17! Huskys i think are aggrestive.
edit: goldens do not have aot of energy boarder collies will. Goldens so not bite the last 3 i have had would never hurt a fly. Seeing that her picture has a german shepard in it makes me think she doesnt know alot about goldens!
edit: there is an english cream golden they are lighter in color.i have one

Golden Retriever- Despite people saying they are "calm" 80% of the time it's false. These dogs will have HIGH energy. Which means they will want to run! I had one and was constantly thinking of new ways to get out some energy. (biking, roller blading, running, walking, hiking, swimming, frisbee, etc) the list goes on and on. SO be ready to get creative! You need to be VERY, and i stress this so much, VERY careful who you buy a golden from. They have risen in the "dog biting" category from bad breeding. So you must do a ton of research into the breeder. I would suggest you get a dog from both working and confirmation: meaning they show their dog in the ring but also do fieldwork, agility and obedience. They are different types of Golden's (American and the Scotland type) Scotland will normally have light colors. Breeders saying they are making "rare while Golden's" is BS!!!!!!!!!!!! There is NO SUCH THING as a "white golden" they are all "gold" (to very light to dark). Also be ready to brush these dogs. Even if you get a shorter hair. They have a double coat which will always need brushing.
Husky- Very vocal. They will Howl a lot and do different types of sounds. They also have a double coat will will need tons of brushing. They DO NOT do well in heat. They NEED a job. So you must find something for them to do. If not they will start to destroy things.
Border Collie- Probably the most high energy dog you will EVER get. "I have a 4yo female border collie and she is great! she gets a 40 minute walk/jog on the treadmill in the morning, 30 minute walk/jog on the treadmill in the afternoon, and then a 20/30 minute walk with a backpack or a bike ride, as well as playing games throughout the day, and she still has loads of energy! if you have the time and patience they are great dogs." - Kim Beasley
[ @ Chelsea ] I OWN a golden retriever actually. And i also have a GSD (my picture) so please do not say what i do and do not have. Thanks.
[ @ BYB ] I'm saying breeders are getting Golden's from Scotland. Not saying they are different breeds. With a GSD you have an American line and a German line. Same with a Golden (or they're called English line's, but whatever.) ENGLISH lines tend to have LIGHT golden colors. As an AMERICAN line has a very gold color. And do you have nothing better to do then criticize other people? God forbid we didn't explain ourselves good enough.
[ HERE IS WHAT I MEANT BY "SCOTLAND TYPE" ] "Sometimes called "British Creme", these dogs have the typical loving Golden Retriever personalities. They differ from the "American Golden" in that they have a slightly curlier coat along their top ridge and have wider noses and heads. Their color can range from a deep gold to a very light cream." http://www.spiritgoldens.com/sgr_About_U…

My best tip for you is don't decide based on these few answers. Everyone has their preferences, besides dogs being individuals. Maybe join yahoo groups for those breeds. For border collie I can recommend BCs4me as an excellent one.
Golden retriever is probably the "easiest" out of those 3 because they make just being with their family their job, but a BC or husky needs a little more job structure than that or they do become neurotic or hard to handle. Huskies are notorious for being great at running away. So if this is your first dog as a mature teen or adult, I'd go with the golden, not because it won't be a challenge either but not so much experience is needed as with the other two. There are alot of bad golden breeders out there(as well as BCs and huskies), so be sure to do alot of research about choosing your breeder also!
ADD: About the answer below me about the "border collie who never sleeps" well I have a BC and he does know how to sleep and relax. That's the thing with BC's you have to know how to give them proper stimulation, and for them that means alot of mental stimulation, not just physical.

I owned a Siberian for twelve years..
If you decide on this pup, they are very high energy and grooming levels, they are very prone to hip displaysia, and elbow problems, (lost mine to hip complications). Make sure the pup is guaranteed and healthy and from a reputable breeder.
The breed in general is very friendly but is NOT for a beginner! They can be controlling and even stubborn to train.
The breed was meant to work, so give them plenty of exercise or a job to do, this breed doesn't do well in hot climates and have a ball in snow!

Husky is not a breed. It's a type of dog. I assume you mean Siberian Husky. That you haven't been to http://www.shca.org, haven't talked to other Sibe professionals, and haven't done your homework on the breed tells me that you are not the right home for a Sibe. They are a very difficult dog to own and are not for teenagers or tweens who do presentations to try and get a puppy.
A Border Collie is not a dog for your average owner. It will need 3+ hours of work and training a day. This isn't a dog that you get, dump in the backyard while you are at school all day, and then leave behind when you go off to college. They are the most active and intelligent of all breeds and are not for a beginner owner or an owner who would even put them in the same category as a Golden Retriever.
Goldens are the most bombproof of the breeds you've listed here. But, they still need an hour or two of undivided attention a day to keep them healthy and trained. They have a coat that basically always sheds and they aren't magically laid back dogs.
If your whole family is ready for a dog, then sit down at http://www.petfinder.com and find a few dogs that appeal to you. Then, research the breed/breeds that the dog is. Visit the rescue sites and parent breed clubs to learn about the negatives of the breed. Honestly, a dog that's 2+ years old is the often best first dog, especially if it comes from a private rescue. You don't deal with housebreaking, you don't deal with puppy brain, you don't deal with them eating your couch.
Edit: There is no such thing as a "Scotland type" of Golden. More backyard breeder puppy mill hooey. There is ONE type of Golden. The Golden Retriever. No colour is more special or rare than another. There is no English, Scottish, American, Eurasian, Imperial, Mini, Teacup, or anything else. If you are intersted in a Golden, start here: http://grca.org/
