My car was broken into and the police aren't doing anything about it.?
Today after work, my car was broken into. I have an idea of who did it. The main part; they didn't take anything. The police told me there was nothing they could do, and that the report would just sit. The females husband that unlocked my car door left my trunk open, took stuff out the glove box and trunk and scattered them about in my car and ruined my $100+ books for school. I need to know what I should do next. I want to press charges but the police told me there is not point in filing a report. What can I do? I need answers ASAP please.

Do you have an eyewitness who can make a positive identification?
Do you have a clip from a surveillance camera?
"Having an idea" is nothing the police can act upon. You don't mention the car being vandalized, just unlocked, and nothing was stolen, so they aren't going to send out the CSI team. You can't press charges on a hunch.

If the police won't get involved and you don't have concrete proof of who did it, you are pretty well out of luck. You can try to collect insurance on it but chances are you deductible is higher than the value of the property.

You may THINK you know who did it, but without witnesses or some kind of photo/video evidence, the police are not going to do anything. They are going to concentrate on the important stuff, like murderers and gang bangers.
Call your insurance and make a claim.

Girl, please, the cops are lazy. I got hit by a friggin SEMI! They had all his info at the weigh station, I got his plates. He TOTALED my 1998 Mustang and they didn't do a d*** thing. It's total BS. It all depends on where you live. Get new books. The crime against you seems personal. Like, an angry ex.

Unless you have some solid proof that the person(s) you think did it actually did do it then the police are right, their is not much either they or you can do about it.

If you know who it was (not just have an idea, but actually know for a fact), then sue the person, in small claims court for the damage to the books.

In larger cities car burglaries are not investigated unless there is powerful evidence, like a driver's license or cell phone found on the floor. Los Angeles has not even been investigating home burglaries for years now. It's a sad state of affairs.

Ask to speak to their Superior Officers. If you know who did it, and when, then you CAN and SHOULD pursue the claim.

You have an idea, but no proof. Unless you can locate a camera that caught the perp, you are S.O.L. Poop happens.

AS far as having evidence that is bull they have other technology to find evidence. The whole problem with this is they could careless about it <because the crime does not make money for the city or county,if your not someone that is important who haves high credentials such as a politician, big business owner, big contributor,or another policeman. You are basically screwed, they are mainly after middle class people or lower middle class people that commit small crimes, such as DUI,or drug offences. That and traffick offences such as speeding this is where the money is,basically the middle class keeps the funds rolling ,most of the time they wont mess with your type of situation or mess with really bad situations such as crack houses and so on ,unless its an election year and they can get publicity out of it .
